Recoup that Tax Liability

The next installment of the Lakewood Neighborhood Association Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament — benefiting beautification projects in the neighborhood — takes place April 16.

While it might not be a way to rake in cash to offset any income tax liability, players can pick up multiple top-dollar prizes with an donation of $100 for a seat at a table. That $100 donation reaps $3,000 in chips, and just try to get that type of return on investment in today's economic climate.

Although organized by LNA, the tournament is open to players who reside in other neighborhoods.

The poker tournament runs from 7-10 p.m. at Times Ten Cellars, naturally, with the doors opening at 6 p.m. for players and spectators to check in and settle in with drinks and food. Organizers will supply food, water, and soft drinks. Time Ten will have its usual wine selections available for purchase.

After preliminary rounds, the top 10 players will move to the big-boy, or girl, table to compete for one of the night's grand prizes, including a 42-inch flatscreen high-definition television.

Other details such as a one-time buy-back-in and the consolation table are explained on the registration form.
