Spillway Plans to be Revealed

More than two years after floods damaged the White Rock Lake Spillway, the repair and improvement plans are ready to be shared with lake-goers.

Dallas Water Utilities and engineering and consulting firm Halff Associates Inc. devised a $9.6 million project to remove and replace retaining walls, install separated pedestrian and bicyclist paths, regrade a section of trail near Garland Road, add landscaping features, build three overlook balconies jutting out over the spillway, and install a promenade and plaza area.

Representatives of the utility and engineering firm will give For the Love of the Lake volunteers a preview — complete with a computer-generated 3D video showing the finished project — during the FTLOTL meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 19. The meeting takes place at the organization's office near the Buckner Boulevard-Garland Road intersection.

The total $9.6 million plan goes before the Dallas City Council Aug. 13 after a series of public meetings. According to Water Utilities project manager Cassia Sanchez, Council could approval the entire plan or bits and portions.

Sanchez said construction should begin by late August or early September and take from 14-16 months to complete.
