Mowing Down Air Pollution

The city of Dallas is taking some fairly big steps in its move to go green.

The latest effort to clean up air quality in the region is aimed at yard equipment. On June 21, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., the city will take trade-ins of old gas-powered lawnmowers in exchange for new battery-powered models from Neuton.

According to a city release citing a study from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, gas mowers emit more pollutants than automobiles. Commission data show that using a gas-powered mower for one hour produces the same amount of pollutants as a car generates in four hours.

To participate in the trade-in, residents must make a reservation by e-mailing Nicole Cooper. Proof of residency is required.

The swap will take place at City Hall in the horseshoe parking area.

Participating residents must empty oil and gas from the mower to be traded in for a 50 percent discount — for a total price of $215, including sales tax — on a new Neuton CE 5.2 model. Only 400 new mowers will be available, so the program is offered on a first come-first served basis.

Old oil and gas can be taken to a certified recycling center, Home Chemical Collection Center.

or for about the same price anyone could buy a manual push reel mower. I generally hate mowing but have been using one for the past 6 years and love it. I don't have a big yard but i find it easy to push and much more pleasant to use than a powered mower. And, i don't even have one of the new and improved models.

For more info on the best ones to buy as well as the pros and cons of owning one... check out this website... http://www.reelmowerguide.com/index.html

I have also seen the Brill mowers they recommend at around town.
