It's a big deal when Oprah comes a calling.
Her new show on ABC, "Oprah's Big Give," — where contestants race against time to create once-in-a-lifetime experiences and give away hundreds of thousands of dollars — just completed its successful first season.
Oprah's production company gave $10,000 seed gifts to each ABC affiliate to conduct charitable works in their home areas. WFAA-TV (Channel 8) selected the North Texas Food Bank, specifically the organization's Food 4 Kids program, as its beneficiary.
In this program, children identified by school personnel as being at risk of going hungry during weekends receive about 4 pounds of food in their backpacks each Friday. On Mondays, the students return the empty backpacks, which are refilled for the next Friday.
The food bank plans to distribute backpacks to 4,500 children in 180 schools by the end of the 2007-2008 school year.
With the charity picked, it was time to find local sponsors to match the $10,000 contributed by WFAA. Wilshire Baptist Church stepped up and offered to be a sponsor with the plan of conducting a peanut butter drive.
