An artist rendering of proposed lighting for White Rock Lake

Shining Light on the Subject

Multiple issues surround the proposed installation of 150 light poles at White Rock Lake.

Some people see it as an added security measure. Others see the potential for impeding the scenic views of the lake. Still others believe the installation contract represents misspent money.

City Councilman Sheffie Kadane has called a meeting — 7:30 p.m. May 22 at Winfrey Point — to hear all sides of debate. White Rock falls within his District 9 boundaries.End of story

Lights proposed are exactly the wrong kind. These "acorn" style lights were intended for urban street corners - to cast maximum light up streets - not down onto a parking lot or a shoreline trail. So they will simply cause the most light pollution in the park - for the least benefit. A really poor use of taxpayer's money. This is a total waste of money. With rising energy prices, I would like to see a study of the projected yearly costs for maintenance and power. Unless they are solar, I'd say, "No go!" (There are solar park light designs that could be used. They are used in the park in Las Colinas.) Besides, y'all, they are U-G-L-Y! What a light polluting design! I honestly don't believe ugly lights will make the park any safer. Thieves will just have more light to work by when you're half a mile away from your car jogging or walking.
