Even as vacant lots go, it's not very attractive.

The vacant lot at Abrams and Richmond that is supposed to become a shiny new retail center recently got a bit more vacant.

For more than a year, a sign with the name and telephone number of CDC Real Estate Corp. stood in the lot affixed to three wooden posts.

Now, though, those posts are bare. We can't help but wonder what that means.

Turns out there's nothing untoward going on over there, according to CDC spokesman Robb Parks. He said the company got inundated with calls from people looking to lease but lacking the neighborhood appeal the developer wants to maintain so they removed the sign.

Stay tuned for the next installment of "Retail Coming ... Eventually."End of story

A developer who got too many calls to lease their non-existent building. So they take down the sign and leave the lovely posts sticking in the ground where no construction is taking place. For more than a year. Boy, I want to believe them....

How about a real service station. At $4 a gallon you might get someone to wipe off your windshield !! I remember when Gil Johnson owned a Humble station, Now that ages me, he had a worker we called TBA, Tires Battery & Accessories. He made a good living servicing autos that came in for a 25 cent per gallon fill up.

I know we'll have more "officially" on the festival in days to come, but I wanted to slip in a little note about our experience at this year's version of the annual event.

Gorgeous weather. There's a reason they pick this time of year. Couldn't have been more beautiful. A nice crowd sitting on the dock, soaking up the sunshine with a little cool breeze.

Lots of locals doing well by doing good. Best collection of fund-raising I've seen in a long time. The Peninsula Neighborhood Association was selling their Taste of White Rock restaurant two-fer booklets again. I met four Peninsula residents at their booth, which we joked might be most of the small neighborhood tucked in east of the lake. They raised $5000 with the booklets last year, and are shooting for $10,000 this year. Contact Mel Cyrak if you'd like one of the $12 booklets that give you "buy one, get one free" coupons to twelve local restaurants.

Lake denizen Janet Smith was selling her beautiful butterfly note cards to benefit the new butterfly garden coming soon to the Bath House lawn (Janet promises more on that soon).

Start-up Texas Massage Squad gave free chair massages to all comers and raised over $400 in donations for the lake. "The Squad" was there also to launch their in-home massage service. Watch for it—they've got an interesting new twist on massage "delivery."

We happened to wind our way down to the music venue, just as blacktopGYPSY took the stage. Country rock with great vocal harmony and some truly awesome fiddling by Heather Woodruff, who also co-writes the band's tunes with vocalist Andie Kay Joyner. These gals are rising stars in these parts, and they made a perfect end to the day's shows. End of story

Hard Night's Day; the best Beatles cover band we ever heard.

Hard Night's Day, Dallas' premier Beatles tribute band, plays this season's first Cool Thursdays concert tonight at the Arboretum.

So, do these guys sound like the real Beatles? Just close your eyes and you'll think you're hanging at Liverpool's Cavern Club. Except, of course, that you'll be on the grass and it won't be smoky and it's a great night to be out in Texas. Other than that, it'll be just like being at a Beatles show.End of story

Just saw a police cruiser make its way down McCommas Blvd. Looks like we may be getting a little attention after the recent "issues" in these parts.End of story

I had the somewhat disturbing displeasure a few years back of sitting at a traffic light at the moment a crane removed the Pegasus from atop the old Mobil gas station at Garland Road and Buckner Boulevard.

The station, of course, gave way for a shiny new Wachovia Bank — what else — and the East Dallas icon was moved to the Dallas Historical Museum.

But Jeff Snoyer, who's rapidly becoming the king of Casa Linda revitalization since he brought back the Highland Park Cafeteria and spearheaded a refurbished community meeting center, commissioned a "Pegasus Family" sculpture to be placed on top of the rebuilt Dallas Northeast Chamber of Commerce building in Casa Linda Plaza South. So, way to go, Jeff.

The work of art will be placed on the building during a ceremony at about 1 p.m. May 1.End of story
